A meeting with the President can be a significant carrot.
Because everybody else cares about photoops as much as US politicians do.

Dictators, who don’t have answer to voters or the press, have no such concern.
Hm, ok, scratch my previous comment.

The playing field is thus not level, which can easily result in the good guys making concessions that they probably shouldn’t.
What the frack? The other guy is not under any pressure to show results, which means that I have to cave in? Why? The sheer aura of his evilness broke my will and made me do it?

I would tell him in no uncertain terms that his country is on a dangerous path that could lead to conflict with the United States.
I can imagine his response: "Golly, I didn't know. I'm so terribly sorry. I will immediately dismantle my nuclear program* and cancel all support to the Iraqi insurgency**. Anything else I can do for you, Mr. President? How about a nice BJ?"

*Non-existant.
** Also non-existant. Remind me again, why is Iran such a big threat?

We should have no illusions that my words alone will change the policies of the Iranian government.
That's because you're a stupid twit with illusions of grandeur. Among other things.
